White Fillings

Why do people get fillings?

Teeth that have been damaged due to decay or slight trauma can be an incredible nuisance for many patients. Fillings are sometimes needed to support and protect teeth that have suffered from the likes of decay, as they can prevent the development of any further damage. The right fillings will not only improve your dental health, but also your smile.

Will my filling be easy to see?

Many people believe that all fillings are made from an unsightly metal which covers the teeth, leaving a darkened replacement. However, at Cambridge Dental, we believe in the importance of smile design.

Made from porcelain or composite resin, our white filling alternatives offer a much more desirable option. They blend perfectly with your teeth while ensuring that each tooth remains strong and durable.

White fillings vs Metal fillings

Our white or tooth-coloured fillings aim to tackle decay and prevent any further damage to your teeth, all the while ensuring that they're as discreet as possible. Depending on what kind of filling is required, your dentist may recommend a tooth made from porcelain, or from composite resin.

A filling made from composite resin may be used for minor cavities and has an average lifespan of around 5 years. A metal filling can last much longer than a composite filling, but a Porcelain filling can be equally as durable, if not more so, lasting for around 30 years.

A white filling also has the benefit of not containing any mercury or metal. This means that a white filling is not only more aesthetically pleasing, but the healthier option of the two.

What is the process of getting a filling?

A filling is often needed when your tooth has suffered from a minor cavity. This means that some of the tooth has decayed from within. Your Dentist will first remove any decay and damaged material from within your tooth. They will then clean the tooth, ensuring that any damaging material has been removed before finally filling the gap with a porcelain or composite resin.

Are fillings painful?

Some people may find getting a filling a little intimidating. At Cambridge Dental we focus on ensuring that each of our patients is as comfortable as possible. Before going through with the treatment, we will walk you through the entire process and answer any questions you may have.

Rest assured, that your filling will not be painful, as we will administer anaesthesia before the treatment begins. For particularly apprehensive patients, we use The Wand system. The Wand is a computer-assisted system for administering local anaesthetic, which carefully guides the dentist through the injection process. It ensures precision, a more contained numbness, and overall, a pain-free experience.

What's the best way to look after my filling?

To get the most out of your white filling, look after it as you would your teeth:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride-infused toothpaste
  • Avoid smoking and stain-inducing drinks such as coffee and tea
  • Opt for water over sugary, acidic drinks
  • Cut down on sugary, sticky snacks as these can cause damage to your filling.
  • Try to avoid biting down on hard foods
  • Visit your dentist annually
