We take care of all our patients, but we won’t lie – the littlest ones are our favourites. It is really important to cultivate positive and happy lifelong relationships between dentist and child because anxieties about coming to the dentist tend to develop at a young age.
Dental decay is one of the most common health problems experienced by children. Not only can it cause a huge amount of pain and discomfort for a child, but it can also lead to missed days at school and instill a sense of anxiety and fear about going to the dentist.
We also place fluoride on your child’s teeth at every visit, which is clinically proven to play a huge part in the prevention of dental decay.
We recommend children should be checked on every 6 months. Unlike adult’s teeth, children’s teeth can change very quickly over a short period of time so it is not recommended that intervals between check-ups are greater than 6 months. If they suffer from more complex or frequently occurring concerns, we may recommend a shorter interval of 3-4 months. We also place fluoride at every visit, and regular fluoride placement plays a huge part in preventing dental decay.
We recommend a child starts seeing the dentist as soon as their teeth began to come through. We can then monitor them for decay, and other problems like missing or crooked teeth, as well as educate both parent an child on the best way to keep them clean and healthy.
Children’s teeth can appear dark or discoloured for many reasons, and the cause of this can be staining, decay or if they have suffered an accident. We will assess the tooth and sometimes the solution be as simple improving the way they clean their teeth, but if more treatment is required, we can advise you on that too.
Wobbly baby teeth are quite normal, and all children will begin to loose their baby teeth around the age of 6, and have them replaced with adult teeth. If however, an adult tooth is wobbly, it may be a cause for concern so it is best to get it checked out. It is important however, by way of regular check-ups, to make sure we monitor the transition form baby teeth to adult teeth so we can be sure they are coming through in the right sequence and there is nothing abnormal about the process, like a congenitally missing tooth or misalignment.
Crooked teeth are very common in children, and can lead to crowding and other discrepancies in their bite. If picked up early, it can be treated in less complex manner than if left till later in life. It is better to come in for regular check-ups so we can decide when the ideal time to have orthodontic treatment is for your child. Delays in identifying misalignment of the teeth will lead to it requiring much longer, costlier and more complex treatment to correct.
